CALGARY, AB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is committed to joining the Alberta government’s legal fight against the federal carbon tax by seeking intervener status in the Court of Appeal challenge. The CTF has also intervened in Ontario and Saskatchewan’s carbon tax court challenges.

“Albertans have made it clear that we don’t support the carbon tax,” said Franco Terrazzano, Alberta Director for the CTF. “Albertans didn’t support the provincial tax and now we’re ready to fight Trudeau’s tax.

“We’re proud to stand with Premier Jason Kenney and fight Ottawa’s carbon tax in court.”

The federal government’s tax has been applied unevenly across the country. In 2022, Albertans can expect to pay an extra 11.1 cent per litre for gasoline, under the federal requirementsQuebecNova ScotiaPrince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador are all receiving better deals.

British Columbians are paying the highest carbon tax in Canada, yet emissions have gone up five of the last six years. Canada only produces 1.6 per cent of global emissions so a carbon tax here won’t have an impact.

“Even if Canada stopped everything tomorrow, and the other countries didn’t have any solutions, it wouldn’t make a big difference,” acknowledged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May stated, “the government’s current carbon price gets us almost nowhere.”
